Serena Laverty
As someone with personal experience in navigating trauma, I deeply empathize with the courage it takes to begin therapy. Trusting our stories with someone else is not easy and I take great care in honouring this while supporting you in finding those first steps towards healing. Emerging research, and my own experience, have taught me that our physical, emotional, and spiritual health are deeply interconnected and influenced by our environments. With this holistic understanding of wellness, I aim to provide compassionate, anti-oppressive care that recognizes the whole of your experience.
Education and Training
I am currently in my final term of the Masters of Social Work Program at the University of Toronto with a background in psychology. In my previous roles, I have worked with unhoused community members and adults accessing outpatient psychiatry services. My experiences include co-facilitating therapeutic groups, teaching mindfulness skills, and walking alongside individuals struggling with a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotional dysregulation.
Theoretical Approach
I believe that every client is unique and therapy is not a one-size-fits-all! I take an integrative lens to my practice pulling from various approaches as they fit with you, including but not limited to, Emotion(ally)-Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. I firmly believe in the healing nature of developing secure relationships with self and others, orienting towards one’s values, and practicing self-compassion.
My intention is to co-create a non-judgmental and safe space where together we can explore your inner world and learn tools to navigate life’s challenges. I deeply value the relationship we will build together and feel honoured to be a part of your healing journey.
Personal Background
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by people and their stories. Since then, I have held a deep desire to connect with others and bring unity and healing. This led to me initially completing my BA at the University of Waterloo where I double majored in psychology & peace and conflict studies before continuing my current education in the MSW program. I have a passion for social justice and care deeply about issues that impact our earth and collective humanity.
Outside of my studies and work, I enjoy writing, reading, listening to music, songwriting, and collecting my favourite albums on vinyl! I have a wide array of interests in the arts and humanities that all stem from my deep curiosity and empathy for the human experience.
