Serena Laverty

As someone with personal experiences of therapy, I deeply empathize with the challenges of struggling with one’s mental health and finding those first steps toward healing. I view wellness through a holistic lens, recognizing how physical, emotional, and spiritual health interact and are influenced by larger societal factors. I aim to provide compassionate, anti-oppressive care and have a special interest in working with individuals navigating trauma, grief, and chronic illness.

Education and Training

I am currently in my final year of the Masters of Social Work Program at the University of Toronto and have a background in psychology and peace & conflict studies. In my previous roles, I have worked with unhoused community members and adults accessing outpatient psychiatric services. My experiences include co-facilitating psychotherapeutic groups, teaching mindfulness skills, and walking alongside individuals struggling with a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotional dysregulation. I have training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and experience in teaching Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) skills.

Theoretical Approach

I believe that every client is unique and therapy is not a one-size-fits-all! Thus, I aim to take an integrative approach to therapy by pulling from various modalities - such as Emotion(ally)-Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and narrative therapy. I firmly believe in the healing nature of developing secure relationships with self and others, orienting towards one’s values, and practicing self-compassion.

My intention is to co-create a non-judgmental and safe space where together we can explore your inner world and learn tools to navigate life’s challenges. I deeply value the relationship we will build together and feel honoured to be a part of your healing journey.

Personal Background

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by people and their stories. Since then, I have held a deep desire to connect with people and bring unity and peace. This led to me initially completing my BA at the University of Waterloo where I double majored in Psychology and Peace and Conflict studies before continuing my current education in the MSW program. I have a passion for social justice and care deeply about issues that impact our earth and collective humanity.

Outside of my studies and work, I enjoy writing, reading, listening to music, songwriting, and collecting my favourite albums on vinyl! I have a wide array of interests in the arts and humanities that all stem from my deep curiosity and empathy for the human experience.
